Keyword and Google Rank

There has been a bit of a debate in recent years amongst the SEO experts about the importance of keyword when it comes to Google ranking. Some are saying that because of the recent updates to Google’s search algorithm that content is more important for ranking high in google. While this is true, keywords are still important to give you a decent chance in getting good organic traffic.

What is organic traffic and why is it important

There are many ways to get traffic to your website. You can use social media, email list or PPC (pay per click) campaigns. While these methods work, it requires constant promoting of your content. With organic traffic you get people coming to your website simply because they found you in Google’s SERP (search engine result page).

So to put this simply, if you rank high in Google you’re getting great organic traffic and vice versa. You need to get on first three pages of Google (first would obviously be best), because how many people you reckon would find you on page 30 or sometimes even higher. How often do you find yourself go past page three when searching for something online?

How to rank for keywords

You will always rank for keywords. When you write new piece of content, Google will crawl the entire text of your article or post and it will find certain keywords that it thinks your content is about.

The main thing for Google is to know what your content is about so that it can serve it to it’s users when they perform a search. That is Google’s main job, helping people find what they are looking for.

But it’s not that simple any more. Google has gotten smarter. It doesn’t just look for keywords, it looks at the whole piece of content. It looks for meaning not just specific words any more. The reason for that is that many websites in the past used so called “Black hat SEO” techniques such as keyword stuffing (stuffing a keyword they wanted to rank for into their content as many times as possible) and google would rank them high because of that.

What Google is trying to do these days is, to evaluate the whole content of your article to figure not only what it is about, but also how good of a value it provides to its users. That’s why Google is the biggest search engine today. People use it, because it gives them what they are looking for.

LSI Keywords

LSI stands fo Latent Semantic Indexing. LSI keywords are basically keywords that are related to your primary keyword. I’ll give you an example. Let’s say you wrote an article about Apple as a brand of electronics and your title and main keyword was Apple. How would Google know you’re not writing about the fruit? By finding LSI keywords in the text. Keywords like iPad, technology, battery, etc. Because these words, even though they don’t contain the word Apple, are in fact related to it. So Google knows who is your content for.

So technically you can rank for keywords just by creating good quality content. But making sure you’re getting ranked for certain keywords is still important.

Why are keywords still important

By researching your keywords before publishing or even writing your content you can find keywords that actually get a great amount of searches, but have a very little competition. And most of the times you can optimise your article or a post for these keywords. And when you do, you’ll get on one of the first pages in Google.

And when I say optimise I don’t mean that you stuff that particular keyword in your post a hundred times in places where it doesn’t even make sense. As I mentioned before, Google has gotten smarter and quality content is number one. Content is king!

How to research keywords

There is a whole bunch of keyword tools. Google has their own keyword tool. And it’s free. It’s not the best, but if you’re just starting out and don’t want to spend any money it will do just fine. One I do recommend is You can open a free account which will give you 30 searches, after that you have to upgrade to a full account ($19 per month).

For this article I will be using Jaaxy and I recommend you open your free account, so you can try it for yourself. Then you can just use Google Keyword tool. The principle is pretty much the same.

I will show you step by step how I research my keywords on a perfect example. This article.

Finding a keyword for this article

To start my research I’m gonna try “how to find keyword” keyword. As you can see bellow, the Avg (average searches per month) is 199 which is not bad, but the QSR (number of websites ranking for that particular keyword) is 167. That is too high, because it means there is 167 websites already ranking for that keyword, which means less of a chance for me to get on first page.

On the other hand the keyword “how to find keyword tool” has only 2 competing websites. That’s great, right? Not really, because it’s not what this article is about. So let’s try something else.

keyword and google rank

Since this article is about keywords and Google ranking, I can try “keyword and google rank”. Let’s see what results we get.

keyword and google rank

And Bingo! As you can see “keyword and google rank” gets a good amount of searches (509), KQI (keyword quality indicator) is green, which means good quality and most importantly the QSR is 1. That means that there is only one website currently ranking for that keyword. That’s pretty much no competition whatsoever. So that’s the on I’m going to use for this article.

This time it only took me a couple of attempts. That doesn’t happen too often, believe me. But every now and than, you do manage to find a gem like that.

Now I’m going to have to spend some time trying to optimise this article for that keyword. When you read this post it will be already optimised, but just so you know, all I’m going to do is use that keyword about 3 times within this post.

I will rank for more than just the one keyword in Google, but beacause of the low competition the “keyword and google rank” keyword will be the one that brings most traffic. Over time, when Google indexes this post, it should be on first page in SERP (search engine result page).

So hopefully now you know, why keywords are still important and how you can use them to find ones that will bring you good amount of organic traffic without having too much competition.

  4. Hiya. I just do one keyword for my main title of a post. I made the mistake before to put in two or three keywords but when I have a good niche which has the potential to write a lot of new content on various things subjects to that niche, why go for the kill so early? one keyword to every good post is my philosophy.
Jaaxy is a brilliant program on getting total control and clarity in terms of keywords, search, traffic and competition. giving you the advantage over everybody and what you I pay. It’s well worth it 🙂
